The species Phaeobacter italicus was originally described and validly published by Wirth and Whitman 2018. Hördt et al. published an emended description of this species in 2020. Wirth and Whitman formed this name in 2018 by placing the species Vandecandelaere et al. 2009 emend. Hördt et al. 2020 into the genus Martens et al. 2006 emend. Wirth and Whitman 2018.
