Nomenclatural History
The species Phytomonas campestris was originally described by Bergey et al. 1923. Dowson replaced this illegitimate name with (Pammel 1895) Dowson 1939 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Vauterin et al. 1995 in 1939.

This name is illegitimate as the generic epithet is a later homonym of a protozoan genus.
