The species Methylomicrobium lacus was originally described by Orata et al. 2018. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 187 in 2019. Orata et al. formed this name in 2018 by placing the species Kalyuzhnaya et al. 2005 into the genus Bowman et al. 1995 emend. Orata et al. 2018.
