The species Ciceribacter naphthalenivorans was originally described by Rahi et al. 2021. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 202 in 2021. Rahi et al. formed this name in 2021 by placing the species Kaiya et al. 2018 into the genus Kathiravan et al. 2013 emend. Rahi et al. 2021.
