The species Natrinema mahii was originally described by de la Haba et al. 2021. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 203 in 2022. de la Haba et al. formed this name in 2021 by placing the species Ding et al. 2017 into the genus McGenity et al. 1998 emend. de la Haba et al. 2021.
