The species Flavivirga aquatica was originally described by Li et al. 2021. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 208 in 2022. Li et al. formed this name in 2021 by placing the species Wong et al. 2017 emend. García-López et al. 2019 into the genus Yi et al. 2012 emend. Shakeela et al. 2015.
