The species Streptomyces pilosus was originally described by Ettlinger et al. 1958. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Komaki published an emended description of this species in 2021. Komaki established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of (ex Preobrazhenskaya 1957) Preobrazhenskaya 1986 in 2021.
