Nomenclatural History

The species Gardnerella vaginalis was originally described and validly published by Greenwood and Pickett 1980. Nouioui et al. published an emended description of this species in 2018. A subsequent emendation was proposed by Vaneechoutte et al. in 2019. Greenwood and Pickett formed this name in 1980 by placing the species
Haemophilus vaginalis Gardner and Dukes 1955 (Approved Lists 1980)
into the genus Gardnerella Greenwood and Pickett 1980 emend. Vaneechoutte et al. 2019.
