The species Borrelia burgdorferi was originally described and validly published by Johnson et al. 1984. Hördt et al. published an emended description of this species in 2020. In 2014, Adeolu and Gupta established Borrelia burgdorferi as the basonym of
Borreliella burgdorferi (Johnson et al. 1984) Adeolu and Gupta 2015
