The species Borrelia japonica was originally described by Kawabata et al. 1993. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 50 in 1994. In 2014, Adeolu and Gupta established as the basonym of (Kawabata et al. 1994) Adeolu and Gupta 2015 .
