The species Borrelia japonica was originally described by Kawabata et al. 1993. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 50 in 1994. In 2014, Adeolu and Gupta established Borrelia japonica as the basonym of
Borreliella japonica (Kawabata et al. 1994) Adeolu and Gupta 2015
.
