The species Borrelia tanukii was originally described by Fukunaga et al. 1996. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 63 in 1997. In 2014, Adeolu and Gupta established as the basonym of (Fukunaga et al. 1997) Adeolu and Gupta 2014 .
