Nomenclatural History
The species Treponema pallidum was originally described by Schaudinn 1905. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Smibert published an emended description of this species in 1974. A subsequent emendation was proposed by Smibert in 1984. In 1984, Smibert reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form (Schaudinn and Hoffmann 1905) Smibert 1984 .
