Nomenclatural History
The species Treponema pertenue was originally described by Castellani and Chalmers 1910. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Smibert published an emended description of this species in 1974. In 1984, Smibert reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form (Castellani 1905) Smibert 1984 .

The causative agent of yaws (non-venereal syphilis).
