The species Serpulina hyodysenteriae was originally described and validly published by Stanton 1992. Stanton established Serpulina hyodysenteriae as a later homotypic synonym of
Serpula hyodysenteriae (Harris et al. 1972) Stanton et al. 1991
in 1992. In 1997, Ochiai et al. established Serpulina hyodysenteriae as the basonym of
Brachyspira hyodysenteriae (Stanton 1992) Ochiai et al. 1998 emend. Hördt et al. 2020
