The genus Brachyspira was originally proposed by Hovind-Hougen et al. 1982. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 12 in 1983. Ochiai et al. transferred the members of (Stanton et al. 1991) Stanton 1992 into this genus in 1997.
