Nomenclatural History
The genus Bacteroides was originally proposed by Castellani and Chalmers 1919. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Holdeman and Moore published an emended description of this genus in 1974. Subsequent emendations were proposed by Cato et al. in 1982 and Shah and Collins in 1989. Cato et al. transferred the members of Prévot 1938 (Approved Lists 1980) into this genus in 1982.
