The species Bacteroides buccalis was originally described by Shah and Collins 1981. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 8 in 1982. In 1990, Shah and Collins established Bacteroides buccalis as the basonym of
Prevotella buccalis (Shah and Collins 1982) Shah and Collins 1990
.
