The subspecies Bacteroides melaninogenicus melaninogenicus was originally described by Roy and Kelly 1939. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. This name was affected by Judicial Opinion 86 in 2008. In 1980, Skerman et al. reduced (Oliver and Wherry 1921) Roy and Kelly 1939 (Approved Lists 1980) to the rank of subspecies.
