The species Bacteroides xylanolyticus was originally described by Scholten-Koerselman et al. 1986. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 24 in 1988. In 2019, García-López et al. established as the basonym of (Scholten-Koerselman et al. 1988) García-López et al. 2020 .
