The species Flavobacterium spiritivorum was originally described and validly published by Holmes et al. 1982. In 1983, Yabuuchi et al. established Flavobacterium spiritivorum as the basonym of
Sphingobacterium spiritivorum (Holmes et al. 1982) Yabuuchi et al. 1983 emend. Lai et al. 2016
