The species Cellulophaga lytica was originally described and validly published by Johansen et al. 1999. Hahnke et al. published an emended description of this species in 2016. Johansen et al. formed this name in 1999 by placing the species Lewin 1969 (Approved Lists 1980) into the genus Johansen et al. 1999 emend. García-López et al. 2019.
