Nomenclatural History
This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 31 in 1989. The species Cytophaga columnaris was originally described by Davis 1922. It pre-dated the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names but was excluded from those lists. In 1989 the name was revived by Reichenbach. Bernardet and Grimont established as a later homotypic synonym of (ex Davis 1922) Bernardet and Grimont 1989 in 1989.
