The species Cytophaga flevensis was originally described by van der Meulen et al. 1974. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1996, Bernardet et al. established Cytophaga flevensis as the basonym of
Flavobacterium flevense (van der Meulen et al. 1974) Bernardet et al. 1996 emend. Chen et al. 2014
