The species Fusobacterium prausnitzii was originally described by Holdeman and Moore 1970. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 2002, Duncan et al. established Fusobacterium prausnitzii as the basonym of
Faecalibacterium prausnitzii (Hauduroy et al. 1937) Duncan et al. 2002 emend. Zou et al. 2021
