The species Branhamella catarrhalis was originally described by Catlin 1970. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Catlin established Branhamella catarrhalis as a later homotypic synonym of
Moraxella catarrhalis (Frosch and Kolle 1896) Henriksen and Bøvre 1968 (Approved Lists 1980)
in 1970. Catlin formed this name in 1970 by placing the species
Neisseria catarrhalis (Frosch and Kolle 1896) Holland 1920
into the genus Branhamella Catlin 1970 emend. Reyn 1974 (Approved Lists 1980).
