The species Desulfurolobus ambivalens was originally described by Zillig et al. 1986. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 23 in 1987. In 1996, Fuchs et al. established as the basonym of (Zillig et al. 1987) Fuchs et al. 1996 .
