The species Methanothrix thermoacetophila was originally described by Nozhevnikova and Chudina 1984. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 25 in 1988. List Editor corrected this name from (sic) to . In 1990, Patel and Sprott established as the basonym of (Nozhevnikova and Chudina 1988) Patel and Sprott 1990 .
