The species Methanothrix thermophila was originally described and validly published by Kamagata et al. 1992. This name was placed onto the nomina taxorum rejicienda by Judicial Opinion 75 in 2008. In 2008, Judicial Commision of the International Committee on Systematics of Prokaryotes. established Methanothrix thermophila as the basonym of
Methanosaeta thermophila (Kamagata et al. 1992) Boone and Kamagata 1998
.
According to Judicial Opinion 75 (Supplement) this name contravenes Rule 51b.
