Nomenclatural History

The species Rhodobacter sphaeroides was originally described and validly published by Imhoff et al. 1984. Imhoff et al. formed this name in 1984 by placing the species
Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides van Niel 1944 (Approved Lists 1980)
into the genus Rhodobacter Imhoff et al. 1984 emend. Suresh et al. 2019. In 2020, Suresh et al. established Rhodobacter sphaeroides as the basonym of
Luteovulum sphaeroides (van Niel 1944) Suresh et al. 2020
.
