Nomenclatural History
The species Alcaligenes denitrificans was originally described by Leifson and Hugh 1954. It pre-dated the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names but was excluded from those lists. In 1983 the name was revived and validly published by Rüger and Tan. In 1983, Rüger and Tan reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form Rüger and Tan 1983 . In 1986, Kiredjian et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form (Rüger and Tan 1983) Kiredjian et al. 1986 . In 1998, Yabuuchi et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form (Rüger and Tan 1983) Yabuuchi et al. 1998 . In 2003, Coenye et al. established as the basonym of (Rüger and Tan 1983) Coenye et al. 2003 pro synon. Achromobacter xylosoxidans denitrificans (Rüger and Tan 1983) Yabuuchi et al. 1998 .
