Nomenclatural History
The species Methanoplanus petrolearius was originally described by Ollivier et al. 1997. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 67 in 1998. Göker et al. published an emended description of this species in 2014. In 2014, Göker et al. established as the basonym of (Ollivier et al. 1998) Göker et al. 2015 .
