The family Thiotrichaceae was originally proposed by Garrity et al. 2005. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 106 in 2005. Boden and Scott published an emended description of this family in 2018. Garrity et al. transferred the members of
Beggiatoaceae Migula 1894 (Approved Lists 1980)
into this family in 2005. Garrity et al. transferred the members of
Achromatiaceae Massart 1902 (Approved Lists 1980)
into this family in 2005.
