Nomenclatural History
The species Methanosaeta thermophila was originally described and validly published by Boone and Kamagata 1998. This name was placed onto the nomina taxorum rejicienda by Judicial Opinion 75 in 2008. Judicial Commision of the International Committee on Systematics of Prokaryotes. formed this name in 2008 by placing the species Kamagata et al. 1992 into the genus Patel and Sprott 1990. Judicial Commission of the International Committee on Systematics of Prokaryotes replaced this illegitimate name with (Nozhevnikova and Chudina 1988) Patel and Sprott 1990 in 2014.

Methanosaeta thermophila was created in Opinion 75 as a new combination of Methanothrix thermophila. However, an emendation to Opinion 75 rejected Methanothrix thermophila as it contravenes Rule 51b. As a result, Methanosaeta thermophila also contravenes Rule 51b so is rejected.
