The species Halobacterium lacusprofundi was originally described by Franzmann et al. 1988. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 29 in 1989. In 1995, Kamekura and Dyall-Smith established Halobacterium lacusprofundi as the basonym of
Halorubrobacterium lacusprofundi (Franzmann et al. 1989) Kamekura and Dyall-Smith 1996 pro synon. Halorubrum lacusprofundi (Franzmann et al. 1989) McGenity and Grant 1996
. In 1995, McGenity and Grant established Halobacterium lacusprofundi as the basonym of
