The species Photobacterium fischeri was originally described by Reichelt and Baumann 1973. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Skerman et al. established Photobacterium fischeri as a later homotypic synonym of
Vibrio fischeri (Beijerinck 1889) Lehmann and Neumann 1896 (Approved Lists 1980)
in 1980.
