Nomenclatural History
The genus Aeromonas was originally proposed by Stanier 1943. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. This name was placed onto the nomina taxorum conservanda by Judicial Opinion 48 in 1973. Schubert published an emended description of this genus in 1974.

Although Bergey 8 and the Approved Lists cited Kluyver and van Niel 1936 as the authority for this generic name, Opinion 48 (1973) designated the authority as Stanier 1943, rejecting the earlier name as a nomen dubium and designating a neotype for the type species of this genus.
