The subspecies Aeromonas salmonicida salmonicida was originally described by Griffin et al. 1953. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1967, Schubert reduced (Lehmann and Neumann 1896) Griffin et al. 1953 (Approved Lists 1980) to the rank of subspecies.
