The subspecies Pectobacterium carotovorum wasabiae was originally described by Hauben et al. 1998. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 68 in 1999. Hauben et al. formed this name in 1998 by placing the subspecies
Erwinia carotovora wasabiae Goto and Matsumoto 1987
into the species Pectobacterium carotovorum (Jones 1901) Waldee 1945 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Portier et al. 2019 pro synon. Erwinia carotovora (Jones 1901) Bergey et al. 1923 (Approved Lists 1980). Gardan et al. elevated this subspecies to the rank of species to form the name
Pectobacterium wasabiae (Goto and Matsumoto 1987) Gardan et al. 2003
in 2003.
