The species Xenorhabdus luminescens was originally described by Thomas and Poinar 1979. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1993, Boemare et al. established Xenorhabdus luminescens as the basonym of
Photorhabdus luminescens (Thomas and Poinar 1979) Boemare et al. 1993 emend. Machado et al. 2019
