The species Desulfovibrio africanus was originally described by Campbell et al. 1966. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 2010, Castañeda-Carrión et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form (Campbell et al. 1966) Castañeda-Carrión et al. 2010 . In 2019, Spring et al. established as the basonym of (Campbell et al. 1966) Spring et al. 2019 .
