The species Byssovorax cruenta was originally described by Thaxter 1897. It pre-dated the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names but was excluded from those lists. In 2006 the name was revived and validly published by Reichenbach et al.. This name replaces the name
Byssophaga cruenta (ex Thaxter 1897) Reichenbach 2005
