The species Clostridium bryantii was originally described by Stieb and Schink 1985. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 18 in 1985. In 1990, Zhao et al. established Clostridium bryantii as the basonym of
Syntrophospora bryantii (Stieb and Schink 1985) Zhao et al. 1990
.
