The species Clostridium sphenoides was originally described by Bergey et al. 1923. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 2013, Yutin and Galperin established as the basonym of (Douglas et al. 1919) Yutin and Galperin 2013 . In 2020, Haas and Blanchard established as the basonym of (Douglas et al. 1919) Haas and Blanchard 2020 . Haas and Blanchard established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of Gogotova and Vainstein 1986 emend. Haas and Blanchard 2020 in 2020.
