The species Clostridium sphenoides was originally described by Bergey et al. 1923. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 2013, Yutin and Galperin established Clostridium sphenoides as the basonym of
Lachnoclostridium sphenoides (Douglas et al. 1919) Yutin and Galperin 2013
. In 2020, Haas and Blanchard established Clostridium sphenoides as the basonym of
Lacrimispora sphenoides (Douglas et al. 1919) Haas and Blanchard 2020
. Haas and Blanchard established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of
Desulfotomaculum guttoideum Gogotova and Vainstein 1986 emend. Haas and Blanchard 2020
in 2020.
