The subspecies Clostridium stercorarium stercorarium was originally described and validly published by Fardeau et al. 2001. This name was affected by Judicial Opinion 81 in 2008. In 2001, Fardeau et al. reduced
Clostridium stercorarium Madden 1983 emend. Fardeau et al. 2001
to the rank of subspecies. In 2018, Zhang et al. established Clostridium stercorarium stercorarium as the basonym of
Thermoclostridium stercorarium stercorarium (Madden 1983) Zhang et al. 2018
