The species Desulfotomaculum nigrificans was originally described by Campbell and Postgate 1965. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Visser et al. published an emended description of this species in 2014. Visser et al. established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of
Desulfotomaculum carboxydivorans Parshina et al. 2005
in 2014.
