Nomenclatural History
The genus Lactobacillus was originally proposed by Beijerinck 1901. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. This name was placed onto the nomina taxorum conservanda by Judicial Opinion 38 in 1971. Rogosa published an emended description of this genus in 1974. Subsequent emendations were proposed by Haakensen et al. in 2009, Cai et al. in 2012, Kim et al. in 2018 and Zheng et al. in 2020. Breed established as a later homotypic synonym of Orla-Jensen 1919 in 1953.
