The subspecies Lactobacillus salivarius salivarius was originally described by Rogosa et al. 1953. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 2006, Li et al. reduced Rogosa et al. 1953 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Li et al. 2006 to the rank of subspecies.
