The species Brevibacterium lyticum was originally described by Takayama et al. 1960. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Stackebrandt et al. established this name as a later heterotypic synonym of (Metcalf and Brown 1957) Schumann et al. 2001 in 1982.
