Nomenclatural History
The subspecies Mycobacterium chelonae abscessus was originally described by Kubica et al. 1972. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Hill et al. corrected this name from (sic) to . Kusunoki and Ezaki elevated this subspecies to the rank of species to form the name (Moore and Frerichs 1953) Kusunoki and Ezaki 1992 emend. Tortoli et al. 2016 in 1992.
