The species Mycobacterium microti was originally described by Reed 1957. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Riojas et al. established this name as a later heterotypic synonym of
Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Zopf 1883) Lehmann and Neumann 1896 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Riojas et al. 2018
in 2018.
